TDN-Project 2 Project Description 5 Steps

TDN-Project No.2:
The Symbolize Project by Louise Sandhaus
Brief to our students:

Project introduction and overview
The following project hopes to further conversation among the global community of graphic design students and faculty about issues that we share - the practice of visually representing information and ideas - as well as those issues that are distinct - our contexts, audiences, and, hopefully, our diversity of visual languanges.

The Symbolize Project asks students to create an emblem for their country that speaks to a specific audience (their peers in other countries). Through this project students will confront the diverse and often conflicting values and ideals - social, psychological, cultural, political, economic, etc. - within their own country. They'll have to negotiate their own point of view on which values are most significant. The challenge is equally to pinpoint what to communicate, as it is to visually manifest those ideals in a concise and meaningful visual form.
This project is about the complexities of representation and the significance of visual form - its capacity to create understandings as well as its responsibilities in doing so. It is about how visual form - composition, style, associations, connotations, vernaculars – function as vehicles for creating and controlling meaning.

On a last practical note, I've tried to keep the project as open as possible so that it can be accommodated by program differences and is compatible with various skill levels.
