TDN-Project 6 Briefing Background

Glossary
tactile | tactual
adjective
of or connected with the sense of touch: vocal and visual signals become
less important as tactile signals intensify.

  • perceptible by touch or apparently so; tangible: she had a distinct,
    almost tactile memory.
  • designed to be perceived by touch: tactile exhibitions help blind people
    enjoy the magic of sculpture.

Background
The journey started from a Master of Design degree research project at University
of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in 2003. I have designed and produced the
»Tactile Comic Book for Children with Vision Impairment«. This tactile comic book
turns out to be the first of its kind in the way it communicates, interacts with the
blind readers and in developing the cognition of the children who are visually
impaired.

This project is the subsequent of my presentation and workshops at the PROFILE
Intermedia 9 Conference, Bremen (Germany, 2006), entitled »Non-Digital Virtual
Reality; Touching is Believing and RE-designing life«.
Prior to that, I have also presented the topic at the Tactile Graphics Conference
(Birmingham UK, 2005), the Imaginary Worlds Symposium (Sydney, 2005)
and couple of other conferences in Australia.
